Lergho is located in south-eastern Burkina Faso and is isolated by the Boulgou mountains and a river and completely cut off from the rest of the country during the rainy season. The people of this region live from agriculture and cattle breeding. Secondary schools have only been available in the area for the last 15 years; previously, young people had to travel to Garango, 15 kilometers away, to attend school at all. This isolated area is still neglected today: there is still no electricity everywhere. This means that the pupils still have to study with oil lamps or small solar lights. In addition, there is not a single library here, where 2,500 children go to school; they have to go to Garango for that too.
This is where the project of Hilaire Guinko, a long-standing project partner of the Order of the White Fathers who grew up in Lergho, comes in: His aim is to significantly improve the quality of education for three schools: an elementary school, a secondary school and a college:
- Develop vacant rooms as libraries for learning and reading and equip them with appropriate books.
- classrooms with solar lighting and sufficient school furniture.
- boards in the schoolyards so that learning is also possible outside together.
- Prevent girls from dropping out of school early by providing safe and clean places to study.
- Promote computer literacy by setting up appropriate rooms with IT equipment.
The campaign covered the cost of the solar lights in the classrooms and libraries. In addition, the libraries in the two secondary schools were equipped with books. The exercise boards in the school playgrounds were also financed.
