The "Day Star Academy" founder Jacintha Ngugi, known as Teacher Rose, welcomes everyone!

Jacintha lived with her daughter and husband in the Mukuru slum in Nairobi and was unable to find a job after her studies. She saw how the parents had to lock up their children or leave them alone when they went to work. None of them could afford to pay for kindergarten. So Jacintha started her own kindergarten at home and welcomed all the children from the neighborhood. After her husband kicked her out because there wasn't enough money to look after the kids, Jacintha thought: Now more than ever!

In 2006, after more and more parents asked Jacintha for help and she also found support from women from the slum, Jacintha rented a hut and founded the Day Star Academy, since then she has only been called Teacher Rose. She also officially registered her school with the authorities. By 2020, before corona, they were teaching 200 children and had rented 12 rooms.

From 2023, when schools in Kenya reopened, 168 pupils attended the Day Star Academy. All teachers work on a voluntary basis, there is no money to pay them. Even the daily lunch cannot always be financed, although this is Teacher Rose's greatest dream. But in 2019, the first pupils took their state final exams, and Teacher Rose is particularly proud of this: "Our children from the slum take the same exam as the children from the upper class."

The campaign greatly appreciates the work of Teacher Rose and supports her school in the slum in order to fulfill her dream that every child gets a meal at school every day!

The campaign supports Teacher Rose with the running costs of the school and the daily lunch. This also provides the teachers with a small allowance. The parents pay some school fees to contribute to the upkeep of the school.
